It was way back in 2007 when Paul McNeill, inventor, and co-founder of WRAPTIE™ had an idea for a new kind of tie-down strap.
He had always loved cycling and enjoyed taking his youngest child everywhere on the bike with him. Riding was easy, the tricky part was getting her in and out of the seat on the back of the bike. Putting a small wriggling child into a special seat with foot straps and a harness isn’t easy, particularly with the bike moving and wobbling while leaning on a post.
An endless search for some kind of strap which would quickly and easily hold the bike to any size post- something that was adjustable, lightweight and small, proved fruitless.
He tried regular hook and loop style fasteners and bungee cords, and every kind of strap available (car straps, trailer straps, motorcycle tie downs, etc.)! But there was nothing that could be used with one hand, still holding a kid with the other, that was safe enough and strong enough to hold the bike.
He figured that it had to be some type of thick elastic with hook and loop fasteners sewn in sections. This would create a strap that benefited from having a separate elasticised section and multiple fastening sections which when overlapped, would stick to themselves.
So, it was off to the sewing shop to test my theory! And my very first prototype was born!
Developed in Australia, WRAPTIE™ tie down straps are a unique idea that was brought to market through the power of crowdfunding, social media, and e-commerce.
Not having enough capital to take a product like this to market, Paul McNeill and his co-founder Mark Blackburn investigated crowdfunding as a way to launch the product. After seeing some of the bizarre products that have launched recently they thought something as innovative as the WRAPTIE™ tie down strap was definitely worth trying!
We really do, in fact, our guiding principle is Sustainable Innovation. Did you know that all of our WRAPTIE™ tie down straps are made using recycled plastic from bottles? We also go out of our way to avoid plastic packaging whenever we can.
In our first year alone we managed to use the equivalent of more than 10,000 bottles worth of plastic. Plastic, that would normally end up as garbage or floating in the ocean!
People from over 30 different countries are already using and loving WRAPTIE™ gear.
